Hi Bob,
My commenting policy clearly says that I don’t allow essays as responses, but I’ve allowed your comment to be published simply to address your lack of basic understanding of Australian history and culture. You say “White European culture that built the modern Australia.” This is baseless, as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people not only tended to this country for over 60,000 years, but their labour was used to build this nation, through slavery and other discriminatory practices. As for your fantasy that you did not become a White supremacist until you read articles by me, Buzzfeed, Salon and until you watched The Project, what you’re really saying is that you have, until recently, taken it for granted that White men’s voices dominated media. Now that you’ve been exposed to other ideas, you feel upset. Keep reading more widely. You will see that equity and diversity does not take away your freedom, but you will have to continue confronting how you got those freedoms in the first place. That uncomfortable truth is what you currently rally against.

When i read articles by people like yourself, and Buzzfeed, and Salon, and watch the Project, i find myself actually feeling a sense of national pride coming up like it never has before. It is a sad fact, but although we have been so gracious to make everyone immigrating here feel welcome, by calling everyone an Australian that was born here, this country was built on White European ideals and progress. We have much to answer for in our treatment of the indigenous population, but you cannot realistically look at any population in the world and find a group that has not done some very despicable things to other groups. This still runs rampant in the world today, and in fact Australia is one of the few leading countries that are actually trying to progress past these ways, to a new mode of being.

There are 3.5 Billion people in the world that live on less than $25 a week. I think most humans can feel this tug on their heart strings, and most humans would probably like to do something about this if they could. This constant stream of SJWs trying to tell Australia what it should be doing to solve this problem is just nonsensical though. Let’s say we follow their advice and force the country to allow ever increasing numbers of refugees to settle here. Following their logic, we could start with maybe 100,000 this year. These populations have proven to have more kids than any other Australian population. So their numbers over the next generation might lead to an increase of this population by maybe 300,000.

In following years we start increasing the amount of refugees taken in… 1 million one year, and then a few million the years after… Taking into account the high birth rates, SJWs would have Australia in 20 years time made up of 1/3rd people who are first or second generation refugees.

I am not trying to be hateful. And i have never though this way in my entire life until this onslaught of SJW guilt shaming started occurring, but people want to live in Australia because it offers them a developed and prosperous way of life. Once again there are 3.5 Billion people in the world that would likely enjoy moving to, and setting up a life in Australia, but ironically, if a large majority of them did get this wish, then they would end up with a country that doesn’t actually resemble anything much different to the place they were fleeing.

We have been sold this myth in schools that all cultures are equal. This is not the case. I will say every individual’s lie means as much as any other individual, but there are clearly cultures that have developed well because of their ideas and philosophies, and there are cultures that have not developed due to some pretty poor ideas.

Once again, i have never been nationalistic in my life until recently, but it was White European culture that built the modern Australia. I am pretty damn sure i couldn’t move to your ancestral homeland and within a few generations start trying to tailor it to suit my own western preferences, so why do you do that in Australia? Yourself and Yassmin are enraging people, because YES you should be grateful for your chance in Australia. Sad to say, but you don’t have authority over Australian culture and ideals just because your family moved here. You have to be grateful and unfortunately you might not have as strong of a voice represented in the Aussie culture as Europeans do. But that rings true for Every culture. I will not be moving to India and then trying to make it completely to my wishes, and trying to say that i have exact equal say on the direction of the culture as people who are many more generations entrenched in that culture.

You are pushing for a fight that i cannot understand. Stop attacking Australian culture, or move to your country of Ancestry if you are so pissed of at Australia.

Michael Verona Absolutely, we’re at a low point, where some wealthy nations are allowing scaremongering to minimise our collective commitment to humanity. The nations that are the poorest actually take in the greatest number of refugees: 65 million forcibly displaced people around the world, including 21 million refugees. Turkey takes in 2.5 million; Pakistan 1.6 million; Lebanon, Iran, Ethiopia and Jordan between 660,000 to 1 million refugees each. Australia takes less than 20,000 and on top of that, we put Muslim refugees in jails. Awful and yes, completely the outcome of unmitigated racism.

That we so easily fall prey to our inchoate fear of others, and in so doing do harm is incredibly depressing, all the more so given both the low probability of harm caused by refugees and the relatively higher probability of being harmed by existing, often known, citizens. Once again, we find ourselves standing shoulder to shoulder with homegrown racists and violent actors while defending ourselves against the comparatively helpless.
