I feel that social science literature is still quite lacking on why this movement is as prevalent as it is.

Hi Kuc, I have never worked with Cernic, so she is not a peer. This self- published book you’ve mentioned is written from an emotive, rather than sociological perspective, including a poorly realised defence of discredited Andrew Wakefield, whose work has been thoroughly debunked and retracted. Most of the writing is preoccupied with irrational preoccupation of how antivaccers are morally suprior, and the rest is a list of well-worn conspiracies. The World Health Organisation and countless scientific researchers are best placed to address the epidemiology of vaccines. In this space, sociology can be used to study the social dynamics that impact vaccination take up, as well as discourses about vaccination, but this needs to be informed by social theory and data. The many valid scientific references I’ve cited make this distinction clear.

She published it in an extended version as a book. If science, and the sociological angle of the vaccination issue are so obvious, how can she arrive at the opposite conclusion: “In other words, a thorough analysis of the most common statements about vaccination used to justify and even codify mandatory mass vaccination reveals that they are shaky, dubious and often even false.” To the non-biased listener and reader it is therefore obvious that there is no consensus among scientists on this issue. Suggesting that sceptics have an issue will not be enough if a scientist after years of studying the material arrives to different conclusions. Regards Luc VdB – Belgium

I’m exploring the tactics used by anti-vaxxers to think about whether we might be able to tailor communications to warn people of these tactics, in effect “inoculating” them from the biased and fake info. Your post was really informative 🙂
