Thanks for your comment, Qe. Yes, Western perceptions of medicine are very interesting. The law and notions of deviance shape the way people understand “good” or “acceptable” consciousness altering drugs. We have available to us very powerful drugs via our local chemists which heavily sedate or otherwise alter moods. These are okay obviously because these pharmaceuticals have passed legal guidelines. The ayahuasca, a natural plant, does not meet Western medicine guidelines. I agree with you, it’s about how the public and the law perceive some drugs within a moral panic framework, while other drugs cause less general panic. Thanks for reading!

Even though I know for a fact that you can buy ayahuasca brews online… I can’t say I haven’t considering it in the past.
